Zusammenfassung: Obschon ‘Fokus’ eine zentrale Kategorie der Informationsstrukturtheorie darstellt, ist die Forschungsliteratur kaum zu überblicken und der Fokusbegriff nur schwer fassbar. Der Artikel verfolgt das Ziel, den Fokusbegriff zu beleuchten und ihm damit mehr Transparenz zu verleihen. Dazu werden drei Aspekte näher betrachtet: 1.) gedankliche Wege zum Fokusbegriff aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert; 2.) phonologische, syntaktische, semantische und pragmatische Facetten der ‘Architektur’ des Fokusbegriffs; 3.) zwei grundsätzlich konsensfähige Fokustypen, Informationsfokus und Kontrastfokus.

Abstract: Even though ‘focus’ is a central category of information structure theory, it is difficult to follow such a huge area and the notion of focus is elusive. The article aims to throw light on the concept of focus and to make it more transparent. Three aspects are considered: 1.) Intellectual precursors of the concept focus in the 19th and 20th century; 2.) phonological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic facets of the ‘architecture’ of focus; 3.) two types of focus, information focus and contrastive focus.
